International Nurses Day | The Power of the Right Equipment

Every year, on May 12th, we celebrate International Nurses Day — a moment to recognise the vital role nurses play in healthcare. This year’s theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future: Caring for Nurses Strengthens the Economies,” highlights just how important it is to support nurse wellbeing.

As a UK manufacturer of hospital equipment — and with the largest clinical team of registered nurses — we see first-hand the challenges nurses can face. One key factor often overlooked? Access to the right equipment – which can transform both patient outcomes and the overall wellbeing, satisfaction, and retention of nursing staff.

To celebrate this day, we’ve spoken with members of our clinical team to share real-world stories and examples of how the right support has made a real difference.

Equipment that Empowers – Bariatric Equipment Solutions at Home

To celebrate International Nurses Day, Kirsty and Liz share a powerful example of how the right equipment — paired with ongoing clinical and product support — helped both the patients and staff during a particularly challenging situation.

In the face of extreme pressure, including unsuitable equipment, an unsuccessful nursing home transfer, and limited assistance, nursing staff remained focused on what mattered most: the patient’s well-being. But this led the staff to become overwhelmed.

That’s when they reached out to us. After multiple home visits and a clinical assessment, we recommended the Versatech 1100 bed and TurnCair 1000 mattress. This combination not only met the patient’s clinical needs but also significantly reduced the physical and mental demands on staff.

  • The Versatech 1100 bed enabled accurate daily weight monitoring, which was a vital concern for the staff.
  • The TurnCair 1000’s auto-assist feature meant fewer staff were needed for turning, which helped lower the risk of injury and freed up valuable time for care.

But it wasn’t just about the equipment — it was about partnership. Medstrom’s clinical team continued with home visits, listened to the staff’s concerns, and ensured they had the training and support they needed to feel confident, capable, and never alone.

If we Support Patients, we Support Caregivers – Easier Bathing for Plus-Size Patient Care

In Sue’s story, she shares how the right equipment supported a patient’s personal care while saving time for caregivers and reducing manual handling demands.

A plus-sized patient had been on a respiratory ward for over 10 weeks, and one of the key challenges was providing personal care. Bathing her could take up to 30 minutes and required several staff members — a significant strain on an already short-staffed team. This daily routine impacted not only staff capacity but also the patient’s comfort and dignity.

That changed when our Clinical Advisor introduced the Medstrom ECO Portable Patient Shower.

  • The ECO allowed the patient to wash herself at her bedside each morning, restoring independence and removing the need for staff to fetch water from the sluice room. The time saved was vital and reduced stress for the team.
  • Previously, up to eight staff were needed to assist with bathing. The ECO’s easy-to-use design and targeted water stylus reduced the need for manual handling, helping protect staff from injury.
  • As her wellbeing improved, the patient became more engaged in her recovery — making care easier and more rewarding for the nursing team.

The Power of Repositioning – Repositioning for Pressure Ulcer Prevention

In Matt’s story, he shares how the right equipment and support can transform care for patients and nurses. Faced with a complex case, it was the right equipment, at the right time, and a focus on staff wellbeing that made all the difference.

A patient was admitted to hospital with sepsis caused by pressure ulcers. Repositioning him was painful and required 3–4 staff at a time. The lack of sleep from discomfort was affecting the patient’s mental health — and staff were feeling the emotional and physical strain too.

That changed when we introduced the Dolphin Therapy Fluid Immersion Surface and Lateral Tilt Bed.

  • Lateral Tilt Bed allowed repositioning at the touch of a button, reducing the need for multiple staff and letting the patient rest undisturbed overnight. This helped the team focus on other patients without compromising care.
  • Dolphin Therapy improved the patient’s pain, supporting better mental health for the patient as well as the staff who were able to care for him more easily and feel less overwhelmed.

In short, International Nurses Day reminds us of the incredible work nurses do every day. By providing the right equipment, we can ease their workload, improve patient care, and support their overall well-being.
