Tracking Hospital Equipment: Improving Efficiencies & Safety in Healthcare

Given today’s fast-paced healthcare environment, tracking hospital equipment in order to support efficiency improvements and maintain safety for staff and patients is crucial. By utilising asset tracking technology, in line with the NHS’ Scan4Safety initiative, organisations can benefit from time savings, as well as ensuring equipment usage is optimised. Hear from three incredible speakers below on how tracking hospital equipment is delivering cost benefits and improved patient outcomes for their organisations.

Overview of the GS1 Standards for Tracking Hospital Equipment

“GS1 application in inventory management can support with automation and efficiencies, all of which puts time back into patient care.”

Tamsin is responsible for driving collaborative initiatives to enhance GS1 UK’s external environment and to foster the growth of standards in key areas across supply chain and digital transformation. This includes in key industries, such as healthcare, where the aim is to improve patient safety, reduce unwarranted clinical variation and drive operational efficiencies.

Tamsin’s presentation explores GS1’s relationship with healthcare organisations, with particular reference to the Scan4Safety initiative. She offers further insight into the benefits behind GS1 standards and in particular their application in asset management, patient and staff tracking, and inventory management.

The UK’s Largest GS1 Compliant RFiD System in Healthcare

“We were able to calculate a tangible cost benefit of £2.6 million saved due to the reduction in clinical staff labour searching for equipment.”

Alex is currently Healthcare Consultant at RFiD Discovery but speaks about his previous experience at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. Alex played a vital role in implementing the largest GS1-compliant RFID system in the NHS, tracking over 50,000 assets.

His presentation explores, using first-hand experience and knowledge, how RFiD installations can benefit other healthcare organisations with tracking hospital equipment among many other application areas. He shares the business case for how this was implemented and some of the key cost and time savings attributed to the system.

Improving Visibility & Creating Efficiencies with a Hybrid Asset Tracking Solution

“With the technology available, we have been able to make audits up to 10 times quicker than when they were done manually beforehand.”

Michael is currently Head of Medical Engineering & Equipment Services at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust with over with 20 years’ experience in the NHS. He is incredibly passionate about improving patient safety and enhancing patient care through the development and implementation of innovative medical engineering solutions, whilst delivering excellence in medical device management.

This extends to implementation of RFiD technology throughout the organisation and where Michael’s presentation explores the process behind the installation. Covering setup, the split between passive and BLE (active) tracking and the key areas they have been able to identify cost and time saving efficiencies.
