Early Adoption of Fluid Immersion Simulation for Proactive Pressure Ulcer Prevention

“The ongoing support from Medstrom and in particular, Helen our Clinical Advisor is brilliant. Both organisations have a shared vision for appropriate patient use, which is seen by the effective step-up and step-down of patients based on regular clinical assessment. The collection of patient outcomes is fundamental and they speak for themself, demonstrating that Dolphin Therapy is an effective strategy for reducing the risk of hospital acquired pressure ulcers.”

  • Patient Safety Collaboration of the Year

As part of the overall Trust strategy to reduce pressure ulcer incidence, Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital have worked in partnership with Medstrom, to provide Dolphin Therapy, the leading mattress technology for pressure ulcer prevention and treatment in the most complex patients, to their highest risk patients at the very earliest opportunity. This included patients who had been on the theatre table for an extended period (even 24 hours or more), or where challenges due to the condition of these patients, meant full repositioning was neither safe nor an option.

Behind this successful NHS partnership, this submission explores outcomes from a 500-patient study focused on using Dolphin Therapy proactively to prevent skin damage and improve safety for very high risk patients, with outstanding results that reflect the consistent outcomes seen nationally. Innovative Bedframe Solution To Mitigate Harm for Those with Mental and Physical Health Challenges

“The flexible design of the SoloMH bed allows for customisation for each specific client. They can be used as a flat, floor level box bed or a fully electric profiling bed to give safe, client-centred, dignified comfort and care.”

  • Patient Safety Collaboration of the Year
  • Most Impactful Project Addressing Health Inequalities

Considering the growing correlation between mental health and physical health challenges within the healthcare sector, the provision of suitable equipment has not kept pace to meet the service users’ needs. This project explores how organisations, notably Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust (KMPT), partnered with Medstrom (a UK hospital bed manufacturer), to develop a bedframe which offers a solution to those challenges.

By engaging with experienced clinicians and service users within the mental health environment, the Solo MH bed was launched. Via one unique platform safety is optimised, whilst providing enhanced protection for both service users and caregivers.

An NHS Partnership That Prioritises Pressure Ulcer Prevention

“As part of the overall strategy to reduce pressure ulcer incidence, and also to improve management of pressure ulcers, Hillingdon Hospital have worked in close partnership with Medstrom to support the highest risk patients at the very earliest opportunity”.

Stop the Pressure Day - Hillingdon NHS Partnership - Dolphin

  • Patient Safety Collaboration of the Year

Medstrom has been proud to work closely with Hillingdon Hospital to support the proactive adoption of Dolphin Therapy. Via an fantastic working relationship with Medstrom’s Clinical Advisor and Tissue Viability Team, the Trust has been able to focus on a preventative led policy which assists in reducing pressure ulcer incidence and patient harm.

This project has been extremely successful in terms of outcomes for the patients who have benefited immensely from a truly unique support surface. Fundamentally, the work and outstanding outcomes evidences a successful NHS partnership. The Hillingdon Hospital TVN team and the Medstrom team have worked closely to promote effective step-up and step-down of patients where clinically appropriate, placing great emphasis on reinforcing training, education and the development of pathways. Overall, this has been received phenomenally well, with positive staff feedback highlighting the difference and impact of early adoption of Dolphin Therapy on patients and staff alike.
