Medstrom Sponsor NUH Adult Nurse of the Year Award

Congratulations to Laura Hardwick, a sister on the busy Lister 1 ward at Nottingham City Hospital. Laura was the very well-deserved winner of the coveted Adult Nurse of the Year Award at last night’s Nottingham University Hospitals Nurse and Midwife of the Year Awards 2017. The award was sponsored by Medstrom and was presented by Medstrom’s Charlotte Topliss-Grace

With perhaps one of the toughest jobs in the Trust, Laura Hardwick is a sister on the busy temporary respiratory “pressure ward” set up during the busy winter months when there is traditionally a big increase in the number of patients struggling with breathing difficulties such as flu and asthma. Qualified since 2011, Laura, 27, from Long Eaton, has run the ward for the first time this year, taking time out from her role as deputy sister on the respiratory assessment unit. Laura was nominated by John Waddington, a registered nurse who has worked alongside her on Lister 1 this year. He describes her as one of the most inspirational nurse leaders he has met in 20 years in the profession. He adds:

“Lister 1 ward is the ‘winter pressure’ ward but it has so much more than a temporary feel about it. I work on most wards at the City and QMC and I have never seen a ward run with so much care for the staff and patients. It is a scratch team that has gelled to become something arguably better than some wards that have been established for decades.”

Laura says:

“I’ve enjoyed every aspect of the job as a ward sister. I find the contact and patient care incredibly rewarding and I’ve also enjoyed being involved in staff training. It’s lovely to be nominated and to get such great feedback. I love working with patients – getting to know them and hopefully making them more comfortable while they are on the ward. It’s great to make a difference.”

Our congratulations also go out to runners-up Karen Semillano and Diane Capel.
